Our pets feel what we carry. When we are calm, they can rest too. This short practice is a gift to try at home. It takes about five minutes.
The practice
- Find a quiet moment. Sit on the floor or a chair near your pet. Let them choose whether to come close.
- Feel your feet and your seat. Notice the ground holding you. Let your shoulders drop.
- Breathe slowly. In for four, out for six. Do this five times. Pets often notice the change in your breath.
- Soften your eyes. Look at your pet gently, or close your eyes. No need to touch unless they ask for it.
- Say one kind thing in your mind. "Thank you." "You are safe." "I am here." Stay with it for a minute.
- Notice. A sigh, a stretch, a yawn, a lean. Whatever comes, receive it without judging.
Try it once a day for a week. Many people find they sleep better too.
